Changes Applied Computing 2020

VCAA Changes to VCE Applied Computing (previously Computing) for 2020

10th August, 2019  |  2 minute read

The Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority have advised that the Accreditation Period for the VCE Computing Study Design will expire on 31st December, 2019.

In due course, the Victorian Certificate of Education Applied Computing Study Design is available for teachers to view now on the VCAA website, in order to prepare for its implementation in 2020.

The new study design reflects several changes with the most noticeable being the subjects for Units 1&2 and 3&4 have undergone a name change.

Unit 1&2: Applied Computing (formally Computing)

Unit 3&4: Data Analytics (formally Informatics)

Unit 3&4: Software Development

The study design is made up of six units, with students having the choice to undertake one or both Units 3&4 sequences.

What’s different?

The table below compares the differences in the Areas of Study between the 2019 VCE Computing and 2020 Applied Computing Study Designs:

PREVIOUS STUDY DESIGN
VCE Computing Units 1&2
2016-2019
NEW STUDY DESIGN
VCE Applied Computing Units 1&2
2020-2023
Semester 1 (Unit 1) Area of Study 1 Data and Graphic Solutions – Students investigate an issue, practice or event and through systematic collection, interpretation and manipulation of primary data they create a graphic solution, such as an infographic that presents their findings. Data Analysis – Students use software tools to create data visualisations in response to teacher-provided  requirements and designs.
Area of Study 2 Networks – Students investigate how networks with wireless capability allow data and information to be exchanged locally and within the global environment. Programming – Students use a programming language to create a working software solution in response to teacher-provided solution requirements.
Semester 2 (Unit 2) Area of Study 1 Programming - Students focus on using programming or scripting language that can support object-oriented programming to create working software modules. Innovative Solutions – Students work collaboratively to develop an innovative solution to an identified need or opportunity.
Area of Study 2 Data Analysis and Visualisation – Students learn to use software tools to access, select and, where appropriate, manipulate authentic data from large data repositories and present the key aspects of the data in an appropriate visual form. Network Security – Students investigate how networks enable data and information to be exchanged locally and globally. They apply this knowledge to Local Area Network (LAN), describe its components and explain the transmission of data and information in this network.

2016-2019
NEW STUDY DESIGN
VCE Applied Computing Units 3&4
2020-2023
Semester 1 (Unit 1) Area of Study 1 Organisations and data management – Students use relational database management system software to create a database solution and a graphics tool to represent how data flows on a website when users undertake online transactions. Data Analysis – Students access, select and extract authentic data from large repositories. They manipulate the data to present findings as data visualisations in response to teacher-provided solution requirements and designs
Area of Study 2 Data Analytics: Drawing Conclusions – Students frame a hypothesis, and gather, manipulate and interpret data to draw conclusions that support or refute the hypothesis (Part 1 of the School-assessed Task) Data Analytics: Analysis and Design – students individually determine and propose a research question and collect and analyse data (Part 1 of the School-assessed Task)

Part 2: Students prepare a project plan, considering all stages of the problem solving methodology covered in this outcome and Area of Study 1.
Semester 2 (Unit 2) Area of Study 1 Data Analytics: Presenting the Findings – Students create a multimodal online solution that presents the conclusions drawn from their hypothesis (Part 2 of the SAT) Data Analytics: Development and Evaluation – Students develop the design they prepared in Unit 3, Area of Study 2.
Area of Study 2 Information Management – Students focus on how organisations protect the integrity and security of data that they dispose and store. Students do not use software to demonstrate this outcome. Cybersecurity: Data and Information Security – Students focus on data and information security and its importance to an organisation. Students investigate security strategies used by an organisation to manage the storage, communication and disposal of data and information in their network environment

According to the VCAA, during the new period of accreditation minor changes to the study will continue to be announced through the VCAA Bulletin. Any changes to regulations and accredited studies will only be published in the VCAA Bulletin. If you are a teacher of Computing and not currently signed up to the VCAA Bulletin it is highly recommended you do so, as to not miss out on any important changes or announcements.
