New History Study Design 2022

Updates to the new History Study Design for implementation in 2022

June 17, 2021  |  5 minute read

As of 2022, the VCAA will be implementing the new VCE History Modern History Study Design, previously 20th Century History, and the new Australian History Study Design. This change was originally due to commence at the start of 2021, but due to the delays engendered by the pandemic, this was pushed back by 12 months. The positive aspect to this delay is that teachers now have plenty of time to prepare for 2022.

Publications are available from HTAV and Cambridge, which have been written specifically for the new study design to cover all the requirements of the syllabus. Most resources should be available by mid-year and so teachers can prepare for 2022 well in advance. This article will be updated as more information becomes available.

Structure

History Units 1 to 4 comprises of 13 units, broken down into the following subjects.

History Structure

Although history deals with the particular – specific individuals and key events – the potential scope of historical inquiry is vast and formed by the questions that historians pursue, the availability of historical sources, and the capacity of historians to interpret those sources. VCE History reflects this by enabling students to explore a variety of eras and periods, events, people, places and ideas. Ancient History investigates individuals and societies (Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome and China) across three millennia. Empires explores the ideas and power relations accompanying the growth of empires in the early modern period. Modern History examines the causes and consequences of conflict and change in the modern era. Australian History investigates continuity and change from pre-colonial times to the modern day. Revolutions explores the causes and consequences of significant social upheaval (America, France, Russia and China) in the modern period.- VCAA

VCAA has a wealth of information for teachers including study designs, frequently asked questions, advice for teachers and lists of suitable teacher resources.

2021 VCE Professional Learning programs

Across 2021, the VCAA will host a series of webinars as part of its ongoing professional learning to support the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). Topics will include VCE Briefings, School-based assessment (including SATs) and Implementation briefings for 2022 Study Designs.

The VCE webinars will be recorded wherever possible and once captioning and transcripts have been finalised, will be published on the past professional learning materials webpage.
