This special education book series is designed to support teachers in their teaching of junior secondary students with learning disabilities or low literacy skills in all common secondary learning areas. They contain units of work that have been adjusted to help students learn the most important subject matter usually covered in Years 7–9 across Australia.
All units have been designed to achieve outcomes drawn from the Statements of Learning that have been developed by State and Territory education authorities and which are relevant nationally. Each unit contains an overview of the total unit which acts as a pre-teaching organiser, a glossary of new terms, vocabulary learning activities, core information presented in a simplified format, and activities that are designed to help the students learn the most important subject matter. Learning activities are itemised at the beginning of each unit so both students and teacher can monitor individual progress throughout. Lists of useful websites for each Unit are also included. Both students and teacher have an opportunity to evaluate the unit, and the extent of assistance required.
These books will help teachers differentiate their teaching in order to meet the needs of all their students through a variety of structured but motivating learning activities that will encourage students to think deeply and engage with challenging material.

Lesson content and student activities for four novels often used with junior secondary students, a unit on Fantasy and Fairy Tales, and an introductory unit on Poetry.
Each novel unit provides a story synopsis, and learning activities related to the different parts of each novel – the orientation, the sequence of events that lead to the complication and the resolution. All of the Units include a range of motivating activities that encourage the students to explore themes that are of universal importance, such as how we grow and change, how we decide what and who are important in our lives, how we deal with grief and loss, and how stories and language can help us express our feelings and connect with other people who lived many years ago.
