Russia and the Soviet Union has been developed especially for senior secondary students of History and is part of the Nelson Modern History series. Each book in the series is based on the understanding that History is an interpretive study of the past by which students also come to better appreciate the making of the modern world.

Developing understandings of the past and present in senior History extends on the skills learnt in earlier years. Senior students will use historical skills, including research, evaluation, synthesis, analysis and communication. Students will rely on their knowledge of the historical concepts such as evidence, continuity and change, cause and effect, significance, empathy, perspectives and contestability, to understand and interpret societies from the past. Russia and the Soviet Union incorporates recent historiography and a range of visual and text primary sources, enabling students to explore the transition from Tsarist autocracy to Stalinist dictatorship and victory in the Great Patriotic war in little more than 20 years. This text places particular emphasis on the causes and consequences of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and the nature of Stalin’s rule. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Tony Taylor is the past Director of the National Inquiry into the Teaching and Learning of History and the National Centre for History Education. From 2006 to 2010 he was a senior consultant to federal government bodies responsible for the development of Australian Curriculum History, while researching and publishing extensively in various topics in education and History. As series editor, Tony played a pivotal role in the development of the Nelson Modern History series. He is author of Nelson Modern History title, The Industrial Revolution and co-author of The Changing World Order, to be released next year.

Ken Webb has taught Modern, Ancient, IB and Extension History in state schools, Pymble Ladies’ College and Ravenswood School for Girls. Ken has been a HSC marker for Modern History since 1988. He is a member of the Independent Schools Examination Committee for Modern History. He frequently lectures and runs workshops for Year 12 and teacher groups in Sydney and Regional NSW. Ken has written a wide range of study guides and student books. Ken is the author of Nelson Modern History titles, The Age of Imperialism, and Russia and the Soviet Union, to be released next year. He is also author of a host of other history titles.
