There were approximately 2.2 million people, or 11.1% of Australians, living in poverty in 2006, compared with 9.9% in 2004, and 7.6% in 1994.
Over the past 2 decades, house prices have risen by 400%, while incomes have risen by only 120%.
About a quarter of a million Australian jobseekers have not had substantial work for a year or more. Many have had little or no work for 2 years.
