This student book, containing student exercises, matches to the minutest details the content of the 19 units included in the best-selling workbook for beginner-to-pre-intermediate learners "French sentence builders" by the same authors. For best results, the two books should be used together.
This French Listening resource is unique in implementing Dr. Conti's revolutionary approach to listening instruction, L.A.M. (aka Listening-As-Modelling), as laid out in his seminal work: "Breaking the sound barrier: teaching learners how to listen" (Conti and Smith, 2019). These principles have been pioneered and put into practice, over several years, in a real-life setting by co-authors Dylan Viñales & Ronan Jezequel.
Each unit contains around 10-13 listening tasks, which provide continuous and extensive recycling of the target contructions and vocabulary items and address the development of key listening micro-skills, e.g.: phonological processing, spelling-to-sound matching, segmenting, lexical retrieval, parsing, meaning and discourse-building. The tasks include engaging and tested Conti classics such as "Spot the intruder", "Missing details", "Write it as you hear it", "Faultry transcript", "Break the flow", "Faulty translation", "Gapped translation" and "Listening slalom", alongside more traditional listening comprehension tasks.
True to the L.A.M. principles, all the texts used contain highly patterned and comprehensible input 'flooded' with repeated occurrences of the target language items. The transcripts for these are provided in an accompanying Teacher Book. The texts are delivered, by native speakers from different parts of France, at a rate of speed attuned to learners at this level of proficiency. The speed of delivery does increase gradually until near-native speed is attained in the later units of the book.
The book also includes five micro-units devoted to phonological awareness, which focus the students on key French phonemes as well as three sets of read-aloud activities.
