Sustainable School Transformation explores how we can best build a truly world class education system in the UK and US. It presents a theoretical and practical case for an alternative approach that combines the rigour of traditionally top down accountability models with the engagement and buy in of school led inside-out approaches; a combination which can be applied to any school in any context internationally. The book is based on the premise that Peter Drucker's notion of addictive achievement, discussed in relation to students in Post Capitalist Society, applies to staff and schools too, and if we want to build a truly world class system it will only be achieved through the motivation, buy in and resultant efforts of all those in our schools. David Crossley and a range of practitioners and contributors draw on their extensive experience of past approaches to school improvement in the UK and US. Rather than reject the prevalent 'top-down' accountability models, the book explores new ways of developing them alongside 'inside-out' school led approaches that really do motivate those in our schools who in the final analysis have to deliver the aspirations of politicians and our wider societies for all our young people. The authors suggest that there is another way: to build from where schools are and build on the fact that no teacher starts the job planning to help students do worse at school. There is another way to develop schools and schools systems so they are able to meet the needs of 21st century learners and their communities.

David Crossley is an independent education consultant. His proven, yet innovative ideas derive from leading four very different schools, design of a major internationally validated raising achievement program involving 700 schools in England and work with many other outstanding school leaders and academics. He is committed to ?school-led system leadership' and the ?by schools for schools' approach. In addition to his work in the UK he has contributed to school improvement programmes in the USA and the Middle East and is regularly invited to speak at a range of conference in the UK and internationally.
