AGE OF IMPERIALISM: NELSON MODERN HISTORY

The Age of Imperialism has been developed especially for senior secondary students of history and is part of Nelson Modern History series. Each title in the series focuses on a particular historical development and is shaped by the understanding that History, as a study of the past, will enable students to develop a clearer understanding of the past and the ways it has shaped the modern world.

The Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 was one of many instances where the imposition of imperial power over an indigenous population faced fierce resistance. In 1878, the British High Commissioner in South Africa, Sir Henry Bartle Frere, unilaterally ordered the invasion of the Zulu kingdom. This invasion resulted in the defeat of British forces at Isandlwana. This defeat was one of the few occasions on which a European power was beaten in the field during a colonial war. The weight of economic strength and military advantage, such as standing armies and modern weaponry, ultimately enabled the British to conquer the Zulu kingdoms later in 1879.

Developing understandings of the past and present in senior History extends on the skills you learnt in earlier years. As senior students you will use historical skills, including research, evaluation, synthesis, analysis and communication, and the historical concepts, such as evidence, continuity and change, cause and effect, significance, empathy, perspectives and contestability, to understand and interpret societies from the past. The activities and tasks in The Age of Imperialism have been written to ensure that you develop the skills and attributes you need in senior History subjects.
